Introducing medium power film capacitors

AVX Corporation has introduced the new FLA Series medium power film capacitors, ideal for AC filtering in power conversion applications.

Comprised of metallised polypropylene dielectric imbued with a soft polyurethane (PU) resin and encased in a cylindrical aluminium can with fast-on or screw terminals, FLA Series capacitors exhibit high ripple current and extremely high dielectric strength in operating temperatures spanning -40 up to +80°C. Specifically designed for AC filtering in power converters, UPS systems, solar and wind inverters, and motor drives, new FLA Series capacitors exhibit high-reliability, single-phase performance, as well as feature self-healing technology and an internal overpressure disconnector device. 

Gilles Terzulli, Worldwide Marketing Manager at AVX, said the new Series were specifically designed with self-healing properties and an internal overpressure disconnector to provide customers in the various power conversion markets with a high-reliability, long-lasting component ideal for AC filtering. 

Available in nine case sizes spanning A to I, eight voltages spanning 250 to 690VAC, capacitance values spanning 10 to 600F, and two capacitance tolerances (5% and 10%), FLA Series medium power film capacitors are optimised for AC voltage performance and exhibit high overvoltage capabilities as a result of their self-healing properties. Additionally, unlike aluminium electrolytic capacitors, FLA Series polypropylene capacitors do not have a catastrophic failure mode, as film capacitors simply experience a parametric loss of capacitance of approximately five per cent, which both negates the risk of short-circuiting and enables continued functionality. Lifetime for the RoHS-compliant series is 100,000 hours at rated voltage and 70°C. Lead time for the series is approximately eight weeks.
