AMD chosen to provide the processing for Xbox720
10 April 2013
Microsoft has opted for an AMD processor to power the company's upcoming next generation console.
The SoC will feature AMD's Jaguar processing units combined with advanced graphics capabilities. The choice to move away from the Power PC found in the 360 to x86 architecture is expected to encourage developers of PC games to support the console. The downside of the choice is that the new console will not provide backward compatibility for previous generation games.
The switch will provide a boost for AMD, who will also provide the processing unit for Sony's PS4. The upcoming Steam Box is also expected to feature x86 architecture. The common platform will make it easier for developers to provide games across all platforms without having to worry about converting different types of graphics effects.
