Innovative power connectors are for electric vehicle architectures.
Essex-based distributor of electromechanical components, Foremost Electronics, has announced the introduction into the UK of the eMobility range of electric vehicle charging connectors manufactured by FCT Electronic GmbH.
FCT has developed this range of charging connectors for the worldwide net integration of electric vehicles. Increasingly, powerful electrically charged vehicles are being developed by car manufacturers as solutions are being found for the technical challenges of vehicle cruising range and charging cycles.
After a development time of just three months, the eMobility charging connector was field tested in Israel where complete integration of an electric vehicle network architecture on a national level is planned. The project is then expected to be rolled out in other countries, including Denmark and Austria.
Due to the rapid development and short implementation period of the design project, a need for harmonisation and consolidation at a European level arose to ensure the compatibility of the charging connectors with the electrical characteristics required and the network architecture. The new eMobilty connectors meet the requirements of IEC 62196-2 ruling (German proposal) where the mechanical and electrical benchmark figures are specified. Extensive testing and certification have been carried out and a conformity declaration according to IEC 60309-1:1999 +A1:2005 for the charging connector 16 A has been accredited at the Österreichischen Verband für Elektrotechnik (Austrian Association for Electro-technology).
Standards in the automotive industry are particularly stringent as not only are climate conditions extreme, but there are intensive operational conditions, such as the effects of salt and sand that must be provided for. The eMobility connector features a suitable contact plating to meet all of the necessary requirements.
Outline specifications of the eMobility connector are; single and 3-phase operation at 230, 400 and 500V AC, current up to 70A, safety mounting and dismounting connection sequence, safety cut out connection, weatherproof to greater than IP44 and operating temperature range of -30ºC to +70ºC.
