Diminutive radio receiver

19 December 2008

Radio receiver IC claims to be the industry’s smallest.

The smallest fully-integrated automotive AM/FM radio receiver IC, the Si474x from Silicon Laboratories (www.silabs.com), is the first to be implemented in CMOS. It supports worldwide radio band requirements, including FM, FM radio data system (RDS), AM, long wave (LW), short wave (SW) and weather bands.

By reducing the external component count and associated cost by more than 40% compared to other models, the new single chip is a 4mm x 4mm package and consumes less than one-tenth of the power of competitive tuner ICs, simplifying system thermal design. It supports integrated algorithms for fullycustomisable multipath detection and mitigation, impulse noise event detection and blanking, and advanced audio behaviour in the presence of blockers, fading signals or other adverse radio environments. Each of these advanced features is fully programmable, allowing customisation for each manufacturer and model.
