Driver IC for BLDC Motor Implementations

The BridgeSwitch-2 high-voltage motor-driver ICs from Power Integrations support power levels of up to 746W.

This IC family is comprised of both high-side and low-side drivers, plus advanced FREDFETs with integrated lossless current sensing functionality. They are capable of delivering up to 99% inverter efficiency levels. The integrated half-bridge (IHB) architecture employed means that hotspots are eliminated. Consequently the cost involved and board real estate needing to be allocated for thermal management will be reduced significantly. The BridgeSwitch-2 devices are supported by Power Integrations’ MotorXpert software platform, which includes single-phase trapezoidal control and 3-phase sensor-less field oriented control (FOC) modules.

According to Cristian Ionescu-Catrina, Product Marketing Manager at Power Integrations; “The low standby consumption of BridgeSwitch-2-based motor drives enables designers to meet new and emerging EU ERP regulations. BridgeSwitch-2 ICs are also far more efficient than IGBT based IPMs across the entire load range. From start-up to performance optimisation, the GUI-based tool, terminal emulator and MISRA C-compliant code library of MotorXpert greatly simplifies the design process, allowing the motor architecture to be optimised in real-time without repeated firmware updates.”
