Smallest 10GHz RF MEMS switch

18 November 2008

Omron’s MEMS switch is aimed at automatic test equipment and RF test instruments.

Claimed to be the world’s smallest 10GHz RF MEMS switch, the Omron Type 2SMES-01 MEMS switch is available in an LGA12 package of 5.2mm x 3.0mm x 1.8mm.

The switch has an insertion loss of 1.0dB at 10GHz (typically, at a matching impedance of 50ohms), and it has a rated operating temperature of -20°C to +85°C and typical power consumption of 10µW.

Many instrumentation applications use banks of switching devices, and the diminutive size of the new device provides an opportunity to save space and reduce overall system dimensions. Omron has achieved the small size of this device through its experience of MEMS design techniques and the manufacturing of three-dimensional MEMS devices. The contact life of 100 million operations in this switch /relay results from the use of contact-forming and wafer-level-packing techniques.
