High-Speed Power-Efficient DDR5 Memory

Targeted at operation in relation to on-device artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, Samsung Electronics has just announced a low-power double data rate (LPDDR) DRAM data storage device capable of supporting 10.7Gbits/s speeds.

The LPDDR5X is fabricated on a 12nm semiconductor process. It has a storage capacity of 32GBytes. Power-saving features are incorporated to prolong the battery life of devices/equipment using it. These include optimised power variation - where power consumption is aligned with the workload being applied. Thanks to such innovations, the energy efficiency of this DDR5 memory is 25% better than for the prior generation.
"As demand for low-power, high-performance memory increases, LPDDR DRAM is expected to expand its applications from mainly mobile to other areas that traditionally require higher performance and reliability such as PCs, accelerators, servers and automobiles," YongCheol Bae, EVP for Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, comments. "Samsung will continue to innovate and deliver optimised products for the upcoming on-device AI era through close collaboration with customers.”
