AMD Strengthens Telecom Partnerships Ahead of MWC

23 February 2024

This year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) - 26th to 29th February, Barcelona - will provide an invaluably effective stage for AMD to highlight the various technology partnerships in which it is currently involved within the telecom sector.

These are predominantly focused around the company’s energy-optimised EPYC processor portfolio, as well as its adaptable Virtex UltraScale FPGAs. Its stand at the extremely popular international event (Hall 2, Stand 2M61) will show how these devices can help to transform 5G radio access network (RAN) deployments. There will be examples to illustrate this, featuring partner solutions that the company has contributing to. These will include:

  -   AMD's power-efficient processing technology is at the foundation of Ericsson’s Cloud Native Infrastructure Solution (CNIS), enabling system energy consumption to be kept to an absolute minimum without compromising on performance.

  -   Along with Samsung, AMD has been focusing a considerable amount of engineering effort on virtualised RAN (vRAN). This has allowed mobile operator Vodafone to carry out end-to-end voice calls via Open RAN technology.

  -   Through its ongoing cooperation with Parallel Wireless, AMD’s processors have been used alongside the GreenRAN software platform in major Open RAN implementations.

  -   The Napatech/A5G edge computing platform for 5G network infrastructure is another key example. It is capable of addressing high throughput scenarios while respecting power budget constraints.
