Compact Reed Relay Units Offer 5kV Stand-Off Voltages

31 January 2024

A 5kV stand-off capability has now been added to the Series 104 single-in-line-package (SIP) reed relays from Pickering Electronics. The part number denoting this capability will be 104 5D, with components being the Form A (energise to make) type.

Until now if a stand-off voltage of that magnitude was to be attained, it would require the use of a larger non-SIP component. With their far smaller physical dimensions, it is possible for 4 of the 104 5D units to occupy the same board space as just a single conventional 5kV-rated reed relay would have needed. The Pickering Series 104 components are highly suited to use in mixed signal semiconductor testers, cable testing equipment, instruments involved in monitoring photovoltaic efficiency, electric vehicle (EV) and charging infrastructure testing, mining gas analysis, medical equipment, in-circuit test hardware, etc.

As Technical Specialist at Pickering Electronics, Kevin Mallett, explains; “This is the first miniature SIP reed relay with a standoff of up to 5kV and up to 1.5kV switching, and so is particularly advantageous where a compact design is essential, as the devices can stack at just 6.35mm. Despite its size, the relay maintains reliable performance, ensuring that high voltage switching, or control operations can be conducted effectively and safely.”
