MEMS Accelerometers for Wearables/Hearables Set New Compactness Benchmark

With a 1.2mm x 0.8mm x 0.55mm form factor, Bosch Sensortec claims that its new BMA530 and BMA580 WLCSP packaged devices are the smallest MEMS accelerometers currently on the market.

Debuting at CES in Las Vegas (Booth #17207), they are intended for use in hearables, smartwatches, fitness trackers, etc. Voice activity detection is picked up by the BMA580 via use of bone conduction to detect vocal vibrations. This approach means that substantial power savings can be realised, thus prolonging battery lifespan. Complementing this, the BMA530 can be employed to support gesture recognition, so that touch-based human machine interfaces do not need to be relied upon (thereby saving space within designs). Both devices feature I3C interfacing. 

"The demand for tiny sensors with ever-increasing performance is growing as the industry moves towards more stylish and minimalist designs that require smaller sensors," notes Stefan Finkbeiner, Bosch Sensortec’s CEO. "The new BMA530 and BMA580 provide an ultra-compact, fully-featured solution to meet this demand."
