Latest Generation Wide Bandgap PIMs Accelerate & Streamline EV/ESS Charging

onsemi has just introduced a further 9 EliteSiC power integrated modules (PIMs) to complement the existing units. Based on the company’s 3rd generation proprietary silicon-carbide (SiC) technology, these modules are capable of offering scalable output power levels that span from 25kW through to 100kW - resulting in the prospect of ultra-fast charging for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage system (ESS) installations.

EV/ESS battery reserves can be brought to an 80% state-of-charge (SoC) in a period of just 15 minutes. The modules also support the bi-directional functionality needed to enable grid stability to be maintained (so charge can move between the grid and storage points as demand requires). The elevated levels of efficiency that they attain result in significantly lower power losses being witnessed - with reductions in the size and weight of the associated thermal management systems being around 40% and 50% respectively, when compared to conventional IGBTs based on silicon (Si) technology. To shorten power system design times, the company will provide engineers with advanced piecewise linear electrical circuit simulation (PLECS) models.
