Element Ploughs Money into Nuclear Energy Testing Operation

05 December 2023

Element has made an $8 million investment in order to upgrade its test facility in Huntsville, Alabama.

This will mean that the company is better placed to serve the nascent small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear energy sector. Via the newly-installed large-scale testing chambers located at Huntsville, it will be possible to simulate the extreme temperatures (800°C) and pressures (1600psi) witnessed in the advanced SMR systems now being developed.

"By investing in state-of-the-art testing capabilities, we are demonstrating our commitment to assisting customers in developing and bringing new and advanced nuclear designs to market. Nuclear power provides 10 per cent of the world’s electricity, and it is vital the facility safety standards remain at the highest level. The innovation of SMRs, with simpler designs and inherent safety features, requires rigorous testing, and this investment will allow us to support the progress being made,” states Element EVP Rick Sluiters.
