onsemi Establishes EV-Focused Lab in Slovakia
20 November 2023
Earlier today, onsemi opened a new application testing facility. Situated in Piestany, Slovakia, where the company already has an IIoT engineering centre, this new lab has taken 10 months to bring into operation and covers a total area of 550m2.
It will be dedicated to further progression of electric vehicle (EV) power system technology and the supporting charging hardware, plus renewable energy generation equipment. Kitted out with cutting-edge instrumentation, this facility will leverage the high quality engineering talent to be found in Slovakia, and the technically-strong universities located there. It is going to be pivotal in the development/testing of differentiated power devices based on next-generation silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) processes. Testing will be conducted right around the clock. Unique purpose-built software/hardware solutions will be employed in high-voltage power cycling activities. Performance assessment of SiC/Si traction inverters, plus AC/DC and DC/DC power converters will be conducted there, alongside numerous prototyping activities. It will also be possible for challenging application conditions to be simulated for more comprehensive testing. In addition, the lab will provide onsemi with the resources needed to closer collaborate with vehicle manufacturers and their tier 1 supply partners, as well as energy infrastructure developers.
