Space-Grade FPGAs Attain QML Class Q Qualification

21 October 2023

The United States Defence Logistics Agency (DLA) has given qualified manufacturers list (QML) Class Q status to the low-power RT PolarFire FPGAs from Microchip.

This certification represents a major step forward in the implementation of these radiation-tolerant programmable logic devices, giving users comprehensive assurances about their suitability for space usage. In order to receive QML) Class Q certification, stringent testing had to be conducted to assess their operation parameters under uncompromising application conditions.

“The RT PolarFire FPGA reduces satellite signal processing congestion with higher levels of density and performance than any other product in our FPGA portfolio,” states Shakeel Peera, VP of Marketing for Microchip’s FPGA business unit. “Microchip is committed to providing high-quality and reliable solutions, and this milestone qualification provides customers with added confidence when designing our devices into their spaceflight systems.”

Featuring embedded SRAM and sophisticated DSP elements, RT PolarFire devices provide the processing power and flexibility needed to support high-resolution imaging for Earth observation. They can also be used in multi-spectral and hyper-spectral imaging deployments, plus various other forms of instrumentation.
