Online Design Automation Platform for Power System Implementation Gains Key Additional Dimension

06 October 2023

Power Integrations’ widely used PI Expert design automation tool (which is responsible for thousands of design projects each month) now has extra functional aspects added that will further facilitate the creation of fully effective power supplies.

Through the integration of SnapMagic’s schematic export technology into this web-based platform, the process has now been made more comprehensive, with the upshot that even more time and engineering resources can be saved (with weeks being taken off the average development project). It means that, in addition to taking the specifications input by a user then constructing an optimised power conversion system layout and supporting bill-of-materials (based on Power Integrations power ICs, plus passive components from various suppliers and custom magnetics), detailed schematics and netlists can also be generated. The workflow is thus accelerated and potential risks of manual errors can be mitigated. Prior to this announcement, PI Expert required manual transcription into a CAD package in order for simulations and physical layout renderings to be derived (but this could lead to the prospect of transcription errors arising if not conducted correctly). Now users just have to select File > Export Schematic and then define what PCB format they want. The schematic translator subsequently provides a completed schematic ready for exporting. Via the added export functionality, design transfer (including schematic symbols, PCB footprints, 3D models and pin-to-pin electrical connections) into the most commonplace PCB CAD tools is straightforward. The CAD tools supported are Cadence OrCAD, Altium, Autodesk Eagle/Fusion360 and KiCad.

As Trevor Hiatt, Power Integrations’ Director of Channel Marketing, explained; "Eliminating the need to manually create or download symbols, draw a schematic and then port those files into a PCB layout tool will save time, reduce transcription errors and, importantly, assist with version control and traceability.”

“Power Integrations has created an extraordinary power supply design tool. By pairing it with SnapMagic’s CAD expertise, we’ve made it possible to export schematics in real time, obliterating the old timelines and freeing engineers to do what they do best - innovate. We’re not just saving engineers weeks; we’re changing the game entirely,” added SnapMagic CEO, Natasha Baker.
