Proximity Sensing Unit with Built-In VCSEL Emitter

03 October 2023

The RPR-0720 optical sensor module from ROHM leverages an arrangement where a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) has been incorporated - meaning that the light transmitting and receiving elements are encompassed within a single solution.

With a 2mm × 1mm footprint, this compact unit is intended for proximity sensing purposes, and is particular suited to space-limited wearable and IoT-oriented implementations. Employment of a VCSEL-based emitter results in enhanced directivity, compared to LEDs. Its wide input voltage range (from 2.7V to 4.5V) avoids having to include an accompanying voltage booster when running off a Li-ion battery - thereby keeping down the board real estate needing to be allocated to the system.
