Raspberry Pi 5 Modules Ready for Pre-Ordering from Farnell

29 September 2023

With faster processing speeds and enhanced graphics handling capabilities, the Raspberry Pi 5 4GByte and 8GByte boards are certain to gain a lot of interest from the engineering community. As of today they are available for pre-order via global supply partner Farnell (with shipments commencing in late October).

They each leverage a RP1 I/O controller chip, developed in-house by Raspberry Pi's engineering team, as well as a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor device running at up to 2.4GHz, with 512kBytes of L2 cache and 2MBytes of shared L3 cache. Compared to the previous Raspberry Pi generation, these new computing modules support 2-3x times greater overall performance, along with enhanced graphics processing unit (GPU) performance (thanks to use of VideoCore VII chips). There are also major improvements in terms of camera and display functionality. 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0/Bluetooth LE wireless technology has been incorporated, plus 2× USB 3.0 ports and Gbit Ethernet interfacing.

Commenting on the new release, Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton stated; “Raspberry Pi 5 is the single largest engineering program we’ve ever undertaken, spanning more than half a decade. We’re hugely excited by the performance of the completed product.”

Simon Meadmore, VP Product & Supplier Management at Farnell added; “Farnell is proud to be the exclusive global manufacturing licensee for Raspberry Pi 5, building on the phenomenal success of Raspberry Pi 4. The new boards offer users an impressive increase in CPU and GPU performance, together with many improvements to camera, display, and USB interfacing that together will provide exciting new opportunities for enthusiasts around the world.”
