Boost/SEPIC Controller IC Addresses Latest Automobile Lighting Requirements

15 September 2023

The AL8853AQ from Diodes Inc. is an automotive-grade boost/single-ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) controller. This highly integrated device, which is housed in an SO-8 package, is capable of delivering strong operational performance while also keeping down bill-of-materials (BoM) costs.

An input voltage range spanning from 6V to 40V is covered (so that a 12V vehicle battery input is easily accommodated). The 200mV feedback reference voltage has a ±3% tolerance, meaning tight brightness control is assured. The 50kHz pulse width modulation (PWM) to analogue dimming mode (going from 100% right down to 1%) prevents flickering being witnessed. Numerous protection functions have been included to safeguard against over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature and short-circuit situations. The buck-boost-like topology is highly applicable for use in head-up display (HUD) systems. Other possibilities include vehicle exterior lights, headlamps and display backlighting.
