Game-Changing 65GHz-Rated High-Resolution Oscilloscope Addresses PCIe & USB-C Analysis

06 September 2023

With the rising speeds of serial interfacing, alongside use of multi-level signalling, dynamic link equalisation and suchlike, the instrumentation being assigned to carry out testing needs to have augmented bandwidth and resolution capabilities.

In response to this, the latest incarnation of Teledyne LeCroy’s widely popular WaveMaster series has just been announced. With a built-in PC that leverages Intel i7 processor technology, the WaveMaster 8000HD presents engineers with a 12-bit resolution oscilloscope that is capable of supporting sample rates reaching 320GS/s. A hefty 8Gpts memory resource has been incorporated for storing acquired data (so that extensive debug observation can be conducted). Models are available with bandwidths up to 65GHz, with their elevated resolution levels being achieved without having to lose any of this bandwidth.

These 4-channel units deliver cutting-edge signal characterisation performance, so that assured compliance validation can be obtained. They can handle the 64GT/s data rates of PCIe 6.0 and the 80Gbps speeds defined by USB4 v2.0, providing in-depth scrutiny of the multi-level PAM3 and PAM4 signals employed by these communication interfaces. A broad array of input ports allows the user to choose the optimal input type for the signal being tested.

The advanced features incorporated into the WaveMaster 8000HD unit will prove pivotal in complex link and high-speed embedded system debugging activities. Test engineers will be able to seamlessly merge its functions with accompanying Teledyne LeCroy PCIe or USB protocol analysis hardware using CrossSync PHY cross-layer analysis to provide unique insight into high-speed link behaviours. Over 20 low-speed serial triggers and decoders are accessible, making it straightforward to action low-speed and high-speed debug on the same oscilloscope. The capturing of low-speed serial data sideband, training and negotiation links, power rails, plus other associated signals will all be significantly facilitated too (without the need for the probe adaptors mandated by other solutions).

Via the supporting SDA Expert serial data analysis software (an upgrade of the company’s previous SDA package), tailored examination is enabled for interfaces based on PCIe, USB, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, DDR, etc. Consequently, users have a comprehensive analysis toolbox at their fingertips. Sophisticated PAM and non-return-to-zero eye diagram, jitter and link analysis tools are also encompassed.
