Tiny But Powerful Cellular IoT Module with 2G Fallback Feature

With a 16mm x 16mm footprint, the LEXI-R4 from u-blox is compact module that supports all LTE-M and NB-IoT bands. It takes up 40% less board space than the company’s previous SARA-R4 module. 

Despite its diminutive size, this module is capable of delivering a 23dBm RF output power. It also has the option to operate on a 2G network, if the situation dictates (i.e. should the LTE-M/NB-IoT coverage conditions not prove to be optimal). This 2G fallback function is also of value in countries where cellular IoT networks are still to see full deployment.

Natively designed to support GNSS AT commands, the LEXI-R4 is also ready for GNSS bundling. Its dedicated port enables easy integration with any u-blox M10-based GNSS solution. Potential applications for this module include small asset tracking (such as pet and personal trackers), micro-mobility devices, luggage tags, etc. There is also scope for it to be used in alarm systems and vending machines, as well as in a stolen vehicle recovery context.

This is because the AT commands and a dedicated I2C port can operate the GNSS core, thus eliminating the need to integrate additional code into the MCU. In addition, the LEXI-R4 module offers a single SKU with global LPWA (low-power wide-area) coverage that simplifies logistics,” states Samuele Falcomer, Senior Product Line Manager, Product Centre Cellular at u-blox.
