RS Event Aims to Tackle Engineering Diversity Problem

28 July 2023

RS is set to host ‘REflect’ on the 1st August 2023. This combined live and virtual event is being organised in conjunction with the Association For Black & Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Here, the RS Grass Roots (the company’s dedicated education division) will be engaging with 16-25 year-olds from ethnic or less privileged socio-economic backgrounds - with the objective of encouraging them to take a fresh look at STEM and consider it as a career option. It will be held at engineering-focused educational institute TEDI-London and simultaneously streamed to online viewers. Those attending will hear from inspirational role models, learning about the obstacles that they had to overcome and their subsequent achievements.

The figures are pretty worrying when it comes to inclusivity within the UK engineering sector. Females currently constitute only 16.5% of the country's engineering workforce, only 9.9% are of ethnic origin and just 1% are Black.

According to Isabella Mascarenhas, VP of RS Grass Roots Education & Social Impact; “We are absolutely delighted to be hosting REflect 2023 National Day, which is now in its fifth year. As technology is increasingly touching most aspects of our lives, it is vital that there is diversity in engineering to ensure that it serves everyone in our society. RS recognises the collective capability within our industry to inspire and embrace young people from any background toward moving into a rewarding career in engineering and technology.”

Online attendance is free. Click here to find out more:
