Emerging from the turmoil of the last couple years since its last foray, the show has moved remarkably quickly to re-establish itself as one of the most popular annual industrial shows in the UK, with a large number of its regular participants eagerly heading back for 2022. Production automation specialists, mechanical and electronic component vendors, test and inspections systems and subcontract engineering service providers line up with the latest high-tech machine tools and production technologies at a single exhibition which brings together companies from around the UK, continental Europe and beyond.

The great feature of Southern has always been its all-embracing coverage of just about every element of electronics production and test. Within one exhibition, visitors can find an incredible array of vendors supplying everything from passive components to highly specialised sensors and OEM (original equipment manufacturers) parts. You will discover a broad range of production equipment, among them automation and inspection, plus an extraordinary variety of service providers and subcontractors, onshore, near-shore and off-shore, for practically every kind of application. Alongside them are the many suppliers of consumables, labelling, storage and handling systems, along with the plethora of day-to-day essentials that every manufacturing business needs.

Examples of some of the key component vendors presenting in 2022 include Yamaichi Electronics, TDK-Lambda UK, Sinclair & Rush, Trans-Tronic, Telegartner UK, Transfer Multisort Elektronik and many more. New products on show on Midas Displays’ stand will include smart TFT displays with CAN bus interface, and RGB LCDs, all designed to increase the speed of product development. A GUI (graphical user interface) builder will also be showcased, which enables easy customisation and allows the customer to simulate a display project on their PC.

The show also provides a platform for more specialist components. Among them, secure embedded memory products from Nexus Industrial Memory. Its Flexxon’s X-PHY solid state drives (SSD) was selected by Lenovo for what are expected to be the world’s first ‘all-in-one’ AI (artificial intelligence) cybersecurity laptops. The SSDs are proving popular in embedded systems, as security is implemented in the drive’s firmware, which monitors for threats in real-time and locks down the instant a threat is detected. There will be demonstrations to simulate cyber-attacks on the X-PHY, as well as a range of Flexxon’s memory ICs (integrated circuits), cards and modules.

The numerous service suppliers taking part include full contract manufacturing from firms such as Nemco, Cogent Technology and Corintech. European-based CEMs (contract electronics manufacturers) include regular exhibitor, Volburg. Based in Latvia, the firm offers UK customers a production facility well-equipped with the latest technologies, such as EOL (end-of-line) test, ICT (in-circuit test) flying probe and a recently upgraded SMT (surface mount technology) line. ISO9001 and ISO14001, plus automotive IATF16949 certification, ensure a high level of quality and full traceability.

PCB (printed circuit board) producers include European Circuits and China’s Shenzen X-Mulong, and many more. Closer to home, PCB technologies including flexible, semi-flex and HDI (high density interconnector), will be highlighted by Photronix. Based on the south coast, the firm offers a team of UK-based experts, coupled with the latest PCB technologies available from Chinese manufacturing partners. Its fast track service is suitable for small batch requirements, with a rapid response at competitive prices, whether a quick turn prototype or large volume order.

Southern is also an excellent venue to see a wide variety of automated production systems from top providers such as Blundell Production Equipment, Mycronic, Blakell Europlacer and ASK Technology. Test and inspection specialist, Cupio returns to highlight its range of leading-edge inspection technologies, such as X-ray and confocal scanning acoustic microscopy (CSAM). X-ray inspection is used to find faults such as BGA ball voids, while CSAM reveals air gaps, voids and delamination in materials that X-ray cannot see. There’s also an incredible range of workshop equipment from firms such as Antistat, Kanya UK and leading workplace storage equipment specialist, Bott. You will also find stock management platforms from Talliscan, traceability systems from Brady and HR planning from Allday Time Systems.

In addition to the exhibition and demonstration zones, the complimentary seminar programme will return for 2022 in a socially-distanced format. Topics tackled include energy reduction, new technology, innovation, supply chain and business strategy, together with a closer look at present industrial regulations and post-Brexit rules and regulations.

Wide-ranging anti-infection measures, such as filtered fresh air throughout the building, makes Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre a comparatively low-risk setting. There is free parking for 3,500 cars and the venue is easily accessed by road and public transport connections. A regular complimentary passenger bus service operates from both of Farnborough’s mainline train stations directly to the show. The venue itself is equipped with a high standard of facilities, including free Wi-Fi service in the foyer area, along with high quality catering outlets.

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics 2022 opens from February 8th to 10th. Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. More information and tickets are available from: www.industrysouth.co.uk
