Following its launch this week, the first episode of the Manufacturing & Engineering Week (M&E Week) Podcast is now live and available on YouTube – and what a way to kick off the first series!
Special guest, Juergen Maier CBE, Co-Chair of Made Smarter UK joins Manufacturing & Engineering Week Event Director, Ed Tranter for an incredible chat about how UK manufacturing responded during the pandemic to help save lives, keep the country going and respond to some of the most challenging times we have lived through – and also how the sector has recovered following the impact of COVID.
Austro-British industrialist and business commentator, Juergen Maier is currently Chair of the Digital Catapult, Co-Chair of the national Made Smarter manufacturing programme and Vice-Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership. He is the former CEO of Siemens UK, having worked for the organisation for 33 years, and also sits on the Governing Board of Nottingham Trent University, as well as working closely with the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University as a visiting Professor of both. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and has received Honorary Doctorates from the University of Salford, University of Lincoln, Nottingham Trent University, University of Sheffield, Cranfield University and Manchester Metropolitan University. He was awarded the CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours.
His work focuses on thought leadership around UK policies and activities aimed at creating greater prosperity and to ‘level up’ our northern regions. He is a passionate advocate for a new post-COVID politics and economics, providing stronger leadership for innovation and technology led ‘frontier industries’ and industrial tech start-ups. He thinks these should gain significantly more support as part of UK’s Industrial Strategy and greater recognition as our national high productivity industries and prosperity engines. Above all, he believes the 4th Industrial Revolution these frontier industries create must be more inclusive and responsible, create opportunities for all and be a force for re-balancing our economy.
