Are you using Windows Embedded Standard 7 or POSReady 7? Did you know these are going End of Support soon? All Microsoft operating systems & server products in the Embedded Channel include 10 years of support from Microsoft – 5 years longer than for mainstream products. Extended Support enables you to get support and fixes if you identify a problem or bug with some functional aspect of your products. After 10 years, Microsoft will no longer support, update or patch legacy products.

Some major Embedded products are going or have just gone End of Support, as seen below:

Microsoft Product Family Product End-of-Support Date
Windows 7 for Embedded Systems January 14, 2020
Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 for Embedded Systems January 14, 2020
Windows Embedded Standard 7 October 13, 2020
Windows Embedded POSReady 7 October 12, 2021

What does this mean for you? On the dates mentioned above, you will no longer have access to Microsoft support or receive security or critical updates to your embedded solutions.

However, Avnet can now offer the newly updated Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme. This has no minimum quantity and enables you to continue to receive security updates for up to a further 3 years. Or you can migrate to another product such as Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, which includes a whole suite of new features and will future-proof your embedded devices for the next decade. In many cases Windows 10 IoT is also a cheaper option, due to the processor-based license model.

Buying ESU for just 12 months could ensure you can still use your products until you are ready to migrate, or have funding in place to buy a newer, supported product. Windows 10 IoT is specifically designed for embedded, fixed purpose products, such as ATM machines, digital signage, kiosks and devices like point of sale terminals, industrial automation systems, healthcare and medical devices designed and offered by OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). With Windows 10 IoT is it also possible to completely control updates, to ensure that devices are kept stable and secure. With the 15 years license availability in the Embedded channel, your investments and product life time is optimised.

Contact Avnet to hear more about ESU or Win10IoT. Our team will be happy to run you through the options, so that you can decide what’s best for your business.
