This month’s issue, available in print or digital editions, contains features on RF & Microwave technologies & Medical applications.

After attending an event to learn more about Digital Catapult’s Made in 5G report a few weeks ago, my Editor's comment this month explores its paper on “Industrial 5G” for the UK manufacturing sector (p4 digital issue or web version).

Our cover story spans T&M, RF & Microwave and Medical, explaining how researchers developing a revolutionary ultrasound endoscopy capsule built a single, unified instrumentation platform to accelerate design & test, taking them from component & system integration testing, through lab-based in vitro testing, to in vivo pre-clinical trials (p32 digital issue or web version).

For RF & Microwave: we explore how ubiquitous electronics, from ADAS, EVs & AVs to industrial 5G & IoT, increases demands on EMI/RFI shielding (p11 digital issue or web version); we explain EMC/EMI considerations for electrical & electronic equipment, particularly power supplies (p16 digital issue or web version); and we review the basics of NB-IoT – and how to test products that use it (p21 digital issue or web version).

Meanwhile, for Medical: we explain how bioelectrical impedance analysis can be used for monitoring & diagnosis of clinical conditions (p6 digital issue or web version); we explore what EMC means for design engineers working on electronic medical devices (p14 digital issue or web version); we review how experimenting with graphene and other advanced materials can help product designers improve the performance & capabilities of wearables for health & fitness (p24 digital issue or web version); and we find out how a design student took her wearable personal safety device from design spec to finished PCB in just a week (p25 digital issue or web version).

We also investigate the topic of conflict minerals in electronics manufacturing (p28 digital issue or web version) and explore best practices for EEE manufacturers moving into the circular economy (p26 digital issue or web version).

And finally, my regular STEM column reviews the 10th anniversary of Ada Lovelace Day (p38 digital issue or web version).

As always, I hope you enjoy the issue – and I’d love to hear what you think or any ideas for topics you’d like EPDT to cover. You can email me at mark.gradwell@imlgroup.co.uk...
