Secure but no contact

16 April 2008

Contact-free smartcard readers can read at up to 5cm away to provide access without compromising security.

At next week’s InfoSec at London’s Olympia (22 April to 24 April) designer, developer and manufacturer of computer keyboards and mice, Cherry Electrical Products is showcasing this Smarter Terminal ST-1275. The combined contact/contact-free chip card reader can read smartcards from up to 5cm to provide more freedom of movement to authorised personnel who otherwise have to perform gymnastics to align their card with the reader. It conforms to ISO 7861 and is USB 2.0-compatible. It is also EMV 2000 terminal Level 1-approved.

The reader weighs less than 90g and measures 105mm x 70mm x 12mm.
