Cypress UPEK JPEG Reference design authenticates HDD

Cypress Semiconductor ( and UPEK (, provider of biometic fingerprint security, have co-operated to produce a reference design to protect data on external HDDs (hard disk drives). By protecting the HDD, no data can pass between the PC and drive until a fingerprint match has
been authenticated, increasing the security level.

The CY4661 reference design uses UPEK’s TouchStrip Fingerprint High Security Authentication Solution with Cypress’s EZ-USB FX2LP USB controller. It features match-onchip, hardware–based authentification to
protect data and privacy. Fingerprint template extraction, storage and matching is carried out in the UPEK fingerprint hardware-based architecture, which can also encrypt communications in readiness for online
authentification services.

The EZ-USB FX2LP programmable peripheral controller includes an 8051 microprocessor, a serial interface engine, a high-speed USB 2.0 transceiver, on-chip RAM and FIFO and a GPIF (general purpose interface). It has a data rate of 480Mbit/sec, 16kByte on-chip memory and up to 40 programamble I/Os to handle the USB functions and data transfer.

UPEK’s Protector Suite Token application software, designed to simplify access to data, applications and websites, is bundled with the reference design. It includes a password bank to register and access password-protected websites.
