The LDX-B20 and the LDX-SC12

Relec Electronics discuss their exciting new alternative – to replace the traditional use of batteries in DC uninterruptible power supply systems.

Batteries are a standard solution for systems requiring DC holdup in the event of a mains failure, but, despite the long-established technology, several problems are presented:

· They require a dedicated charging circuit
· They require protection against deep discharge
· They need to be replaced over time
· They have a risk of theft
· They are environmentally-unfriendly (lead)

Key features and benefits

The LDX-B20 and LDX-SC12 are designed to replace batteries in DC UPS systems and offer the following main benefits:

· Maintenance-free
· High reliability
· Easy to use – simply connect to PSU output
· Parallelable for increased back up time

The buffer modules can overcome all the problems associated with traditional battery power supplies listed above.

The LDX-B20 is a microprocessor controlled buffer unit rated at 20 A for use in 12 V, 24 V, 48 V and 72 V systems.

In the event of a failure of the incoming supply, it will keep the output regulated for at least 300 ms at full load.

The LDX-SC12 super capacitor module is used to replace 12 V batteries for short term backup applications and provides a massive 7.6kJ of maintenance-free energy.

Case study

The LDX-B20 provided the ideal solution for a customer who originally wanted a low power PSU to generate 24V DC from a high voltage AC source to power telemetry equipment in outdoor cabinets, many of which are highly inaccessible.

The customer also had to guarantee 6 seconds of hold-up in the event of a mains failure/outage. Given the nature of the locations, the use of conventional battery technology was not an option as the cost of maintenance and replacement would have been exceptionally high.

Ideal maintenance-free solution with the LDX-B20

The LDX-B20 could be added directly to the 24V output of the power supply without the need for any extra charge circuitry or deep discharge protection. The LDX-B20 provides an automatically-regulated output into the load, and in this application, also easily provides the 6 seconds of hold-up required.

Crucial to the application was the fact that the system is maintenance-free for periods of up to 10 years with the additional bonus of reduced component count and increased reliability.
